Speculative AI-Generated Design Fiction

A speculative design fiction video crafted entirely using generative AI tools - from concept development and character scripting to visuals, animation, voice, and editing. The piece explores a near-future scenario through the lens of emotionally intelligent AR companionship, focusing on the subtle, often-overlooked nuances of social anxiety and everyday human interaction.

 

The project isn't just a pitch for a fictional product - the video itself is the design: an artifact that blurs the line between prototype, narrative, and speculative media. Every element - voice intonation, facial animation, dialogue pacing, and AR interface - is purposefully constructed with AI to create a cohesive, resonant vision of the future.

Narrative Premise

Set in 2045, CompanAIn follows Cat, a quiet, introverted knowledge worker navigating a noisy world with the help of Dave - an AI companion embedded in her AR glasses. Dave offers real-time emotional support, social scripting, and space-aware interaction cues, helping her engage in daily encounters without being overwhelmed. Through this lens, the film explores how AI might adapt to human needs rather than reshape them, suggesting an alternative future of assistive, compassionate technology.

The Making as the Medium

The core of the project was to challenge the traditional design pipeline by treating AI tools as an active part of the creative process.

List of Tools Used

  • ChatGPT: Generated the dialogue for the characters and structured the narrative script.

  • MidJourney: Created visual assets for Cat, Tom and the Street background.

  • Openart.ai: Created images for AI pet(Dave)

  • SUNO: Developed Background music.

  • Premiere: Used for video editing and creating the UI.

  • Runway: Used for image-to-video animation, generating character audio, and syncing dialogues with animations.

Connection of Tools to the Narrative:

  • ChatGPT ensured the dialogue felt natural and relatable, reflecting the anxieties and support experienced by the protagonist.

  • MidJourney, Openart.ai, Adobe Premiere provided visually appealing assets that enhanced the narrative’s futuristic aesthetic.

  • Runway brought the AR concept to life with seamless animations, contributing to the narrative’s understandability.

  • Suno’s music helped add an emotional layer to the clips, making them more engaging and immersive.

  • The final artifact is an orchestration of AI-generated modalities - a storytelling system built entirely without traditional cameras, actors, or sound studios.
